Over the summer I wanted to capture Manhattan through its emptiness and I wanted to connect this emptiness with my own personal experience. As the empty streets were evocative of old feelings, this series is still based on the loss of a friendship and the experiences with that friendship. These are my moments now captured walking around Manhattan, alone. I have studied Eugene Atget, and used him and his work as a guide/ inspiration to how I was trying to capture emptiness in my photos. Atget captured the architecture and streets in Paris, while they were mostly empty. I connected to this by wanting to capture the architecture and streets of Manhattan empty as well. I wanted to combine two of my creative passions in one. Throughout this experience I have played with getting looser with the paint to give the photos my own touch and personalize them with a mixture of paint and parts of old letters that run through my mind when I encounter familiar places.
